In music, "counterpoint" is the relationship between voices that are interdependent harmonically and yet independent in rhythm. In law, we might think of "counterpoint" as a form of expression consisting of a coherent set of reasons against a matter under discussion that is intended to convince or persuade a listener of a particular point of view.

We thought this a brilliant metaphor for the push and pull of a deal-making process where stakeholders seek to differentiate their positions, needs, and interests as well as integrate them with those of others as everyone negotiates toward desired outcomes. Independent yet interdependent.

At heart, so much of our lives asks us to give voice to what arises distinctly within us while also willingly becoming part of a much greater whole. It is the tension that arises through counterpoint that makes each day - and each piece of music - much more interesting.
